Community for Information Technology
and Society Development 

The community is multidisciplinary spanning the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Engineering. The main goal of the community is to apply knowledge from these diverse perspectives to understand the development, use, and effects of information technologies in contemporary society. The community conducts research and education activities that seek to broaden the participation of minority students in the information society by providing them with a set of new innovative skills.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Community for Information Technology and Society Development (CITSD) is dedicated to contributing to the development and use of socio-technical systems especially in the humanitarian relief field. CITSD is also committed to leading the effort to broaden the participation of the under-served communities in the information society by actively engaging them in the use of social media in information producing and sharing.

ACTIVE PROJECT(S)

Social Media Analytics for Disaster Management

With a support from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), this research and curriculum development project has two main components. The research component seeks to investigate the ways in which Information and Communication Technologies (including social media) can be designed and used for improved disaster situational awareness and for more effective collaborative decision making during the four phases of disaster management. The educational component involves developing and teaching courses related to disaster management and cyber security.
